The Federal Communications Commission voted Thursday to repeal net neutrality rules adopted in 2015. However, some state lawmakers say regardless of the FCC vote, they will seek legislation to continue enforcement of net neutrality in Washington state. John Sattgast reports from the state Capitol.
SATTGAST: State Representative Norma Smith has introduced legislation that would give the Office of Attorney General authority to enforce net neutrality in Washington state.
Smith says it’s about protecting consumers and ensuring an open internet.
SMITH: “One of the things I think is critically important as we have this discussion, is to recognize how important this decision is as it relates to the future, as it relates to opportunity for each and every person that we represent, as it relates to fairness.”
SATTGAST: Republican State Representative Norma Smith of Clinton. Under her proposal, House Bill 2284 would prohibit internet companies from blocking content, and slowing or “throttling” internet speed. It would also make it illegal for internet providers to favor some traffic over other users in exchange for benefit.
The 10th District lawmaker plans to push for a hearing on the bill when the Legislature convenes for the 2018 session in January.
