Smith supports, with concerns, ocean acidification panel recommendations

Rep. Norma Smith, R-Clinton, released this statement today after the recommendations of the Ocean Acidification Blue Ribbon Panel were made public. Smith supported the work of the panel, but did so with reservations and included a letter outlining her concerns.
“It is critical that we learn more, and begin to address the legitimate issues surrounding ocean acidification to protect our shellfish industry. The cost of doing nothing could certainly have far reaching implications on our local and state economies, aquaculture and our cherished resources. However, I am concerned about the limited involvement of key stakeholders, the need to build a solid scientific foundation before moving forward, in addition to the potential costs that could result due to the implementation of some of the recommendations in the report. We must continue to be cognizant of potential added costs and burdens imposed on our farmers, small-business owners, local governments and our communities.”
