Dear Friends,
After last week's marathon floor sessions to pass bills before the Monday, March 7 cutoff, we have spent the remainder of this week back in committees holding public hearings on the Senate bills passed over to the House.
As of cutoff on Monday evening, the House had passed and sent the Senate 351 bills. Of those, 280 were sponsored by Democrats and 71 by Republicans. The Senate sent to the House 219 bills. Bills that are necessary to implement the budget are exempt from the cutoff.
While we have been extremely busy the first half of session, hearing from you in-person and providing you the opportunity to communicate directly with me remains of utmost importance as I represent you in Olympia. I have three different opportunities scheduled in the coming weeks to strengthen our communication. It is essential we keep the two-way dialogue about government and issues in the 10th Legislative District going as we move forward.
District Office Day
This Saturday, March 12, anytime from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. I am inviting you to meet with me in an informal and relaxed setting in our district office. If you are planning to attend, please contact my Olympia office at (360) 786-7884 or by e-mail at norma.smith@leg.wa.gov so we can plan accordingly. Coffee and pastries will be provided. The district office is located at 22 Front Street N.W., Suite C, Coupeville, WA 98239. It is on the water side of the Windjammer Gallery.
Town Hall Meetings
I will be holding three town hall meetings with Rep. Barbara Bailey in the 10th District on Saturday, March 19. The outreach events will be in Stanwood, Oak Harbor and Freeland. We want to give you as many opportunities as possible to provide us with input because so many big issues will be debated from now until the end of session. It is a critical time and the stories I hear from my constituents inform my decisions in Olympia. The meeting times are as follows:
9:30 – 10:30 a.m.
Stanwood/Camano School District Boardroom
26920 Pioneer Highway, Stanwood
1:00 – 2:00 p.m.
Skagit Valley College – Oak Hall Room #306
1900 SE Pioneer Way, Oak Harbor
3:30 – 4:30 p.m.
Freeland Hall
1515 Shoreview Drive, Freeland
Telephone Town Hall
On March 31, I will be holding a telephone town hall at 7 p.m. I have found this format is an excellent way to reach a significant amount of people in the district and still allow them to participate. You can join the “community conversation” by calling toll-free 1-877-229-8493 and entering 14881. You can listen in, ask questions and participate in polls.
If you have any questions or comments about any of the upcoming events, please do not hesitate to contact my office. Again, I can be reached at (360) 786-7884 or by e-mail at norma.smith@leg.wa.gov.
As always, thank you for reading my email update. I look forward to your continued input on the issues of importance to you. Have a lovely week.
Warm regards.
Warm Regards,

Norma Smith
